CHRC Slams International Groups Pushing CNRP Back

Phnom Penh: The Chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee,Keo Remy, has stated that in the 30 years since the establishment of the Paris Peace Agreement, Cambodia has implemented human rights, civil rights and political rights well and made progress. He responded to allegations by some Western countries that Cambodia's restrictions on political rights were "unacceptable" and that the allegations were biased to former CNRP. He has questioned the group saying, "Is it necessary for the CNRP to participate in order to be called a multi-party liberal democracy?"

Remy has responded to allegations by some EU contries relating to the dissolution of the former CNRP. He has stressed that CNRP accepted foreign plans to overthrow the government in 2017. He added that Cambodia is a country with laws and that laws must be obeyed.

He emphaises, "The concerns of the United States, the European Union, and some of the international community - let's be honest! They are referring to the CNRP, which is what they are focusing on. So what we are saying is that political parties need to have the CNRP to participate, called multi-party liberal democracy or something? Because I would like to inform you that the multi-party, any political party, any individual has the right to form a political party, participate in activities within the political party."

On 16 November 2017, the Supreme Court dissolved the CNRP following a lawsuit filed by the Ministry of Interior, alleging that the party conspired with foreigners to overthrow the legitimate government. Remy has said that the dissolution of the CNRP was due to the party violating the law on receiving foreign aid to serve foreigners.

He has added, "Let me give an example. What if an American leader serves China, can you accept that?" He said that in Cambodia, there are many parties that have criticised the government, but because they did not violate the law, they can still exercise their political rights freely.

So far, Cambodia has around 65 political parties on the list to contest the election. Some of them are also gathering to form an alliance.
